What 5 Year Olds Love
Five year olds are bursting with imagination and energy. They love pretend play, first LEGO sets, simple board games, crafts, things that light up or launch, and anything that lets them run, jump and climb. Most are ready for toys labeled 4+ or 5+.
Mix Screens With Screen-Free Play
Many of the best gifts are open-ended: blocks, magnetic tiles, art kits, pretend play and outdoor toys. They can be played a hundred different ways and grow with your child. Electronic toys are fun, but balance them with toys that make kids build, imagine and move.

Respect the Age Label
Age grades on toys are about safety as much as skill. The CPSC requires warnings on toys with small parts that are choking hazards for children under 3, and advises keeping deflated balloons away from kids under 8. If a younger sibling shares the playroom, pick toys that are safe for the youngest child.
