How We Chose the Best Gifts for Preteens
To choose the best gifts for preteens, we chose gifts that mix playful and grown-up for preteens, covering gadgets, room decor, games and creativity.
We also follow the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s advice to respect age labels, add helmets for riding toys and keep small parts away from children under 3. See the CPSC toy safety tips.
Product details in this guide come from manufacturer specifications, age grading and verified owner feedback. Read more on our How We Test page.
How to Choose the Best Gifts for Preteens
Use these pointers to narrow down the best gifts for preteens for the family you are shopping for.
Gifts for the Preteen Stage
Preteens sit between childhood and the teen years. Mix something playful, like a digital pet or a gel blaster, with something grown-up, like a camera, room lights or a stylish water bottle.
Room Decor Gifts Tweens Love
Lighting is the easiest way to change a room: galaxy projectors, string lights and neon signs make a big difference without paint or furniture. Check outlets and hanging options before you buy.
Respect the Age Label
Age grades on toys are about safety as much as skill. The CPSC requires warnings on toys with small parts that are choking hazards for children under 3, and advises keeping deflated balloons away from kids under 8. If a younger sibling shares the playroom, pick toys that are safe for the youngest child.
Balance Tech With Play
Tech gifts are exciting, but the best ones encourage creating, coding or moving rather than passive scrolling. Agree on family screen-time rules before the gift is opened, and look for kid-safe devices without open internet access.
Match the Gift to Their Interests
The best gift fits what a child already loves: dinosaurs, art, sports, building, science or pretend play. Ask parents or teachers what they are into right now, and favor toys that let kids go deeper into that interest.
Gift Tips for Preteens
A few simple ideas make the best gifts for preteens feel even more personal:
- Avoid gifts that feel babyish.
- Ask about their style.
- Pick gifts to share with friends.
- Upgrade their room.
- Respect their privacy with journals.
