How We Chose the Best Big Christmas Gifts for Kids
To choose the best big christmas gifts for kids, we focused on gifts with a true “main event” feel, then checked durability, assembly, space needs and whether kids will still use them months later.
We also follow the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s advice to respect age labels, add helmets for riding toys and keep small parts away from children under 3. See the CPSC toy safety tips.
Product details in this guide come from manufacturer specifications, age grading and verified owner feedback. Read more on our How We Test page.
Buying Guide: Big Christmas Gifts for Kids
Here is how to choose the best big Christmas gifts for kids without regret.
Plan for Assembly
Big gifts often need an hour or more to assemble. Do it before Christmas Eve, or plan a “build together” morning.
Think About Long-Term Space
Measure where it will live. Coasters, dollhouses and kitchens need permanent floor space; consoles and train sets can be packed away.
Wrap and Present It Well
Big, awkward boxes are part of the fun on Christmas morning. For huge gifts, a bow on top and a wrapped “clue” box under the tree works well. Set up ride-ons and kitchens the night before so kids can play right away.
Choose Toys That Grow With Them
Convertible toys (walkers that become wagons, trikes that become balance bikes, LEGO sets that build three models) and open-ended toys stay interesting longer, which makes them better value.
Consider Experiences Too
For kids who have plenty of toys, an experience gift such as a zoo membership, classes or tickets can be just as exciting. Pair it with a small related toy to unwrap.
Set a Budget Before You Shop
Decide on a total and a per-child amount before you start. Prices on popular toys swing a lot in November and December, so add items to a list early and buy when the price looks right. Remember to budget for batteries, film or refills.
Big Gift Planning Tips
Make the best big Christmas gifts for kids go smoothly:
- Order early: big items ship slowly in December.
- Check box dimensions for hiding spots.
- Assemble while kids sleep, not on Christmas morning.
- Keep tools and batteries handy.
- Plan where old toys will go.
