Buying Guide: Christmas Gifts for 2 Year Olds
Use these tips to pick the best Christmas gifts for 2 year old toddlers.
Pretend Play Is Everything
Two-year-olds copy everything they see. Kitchens, tool sets, cleaning sets and ice cream shops let them act out real life, which builds language and social skills.
Active Gifts for Busy Bodies
Balance bikes, hoppers and batting tees burn energy and build coordination. Add a helmet for any riding toy.
Respect the Age Label
Age grades on toys are about safety as much as skill. The CPSC requires warnings on toys with small parts that are choking hazards for children under 3, and advises keeping deflated balloons away from kids under 8. If a younger sibling shares the playroom, pick toys that are safe for the youngest child.
Mix Screens With Screen-Free Play
Many of the best gifts are open-ended: blocks, magnetic tiles, art kits, pretend play and outdoor toys. They can be played a hundred different ways and grow with your child. Electronic toys are fun, but balance them with toys that make kids build, imagine and move.
Watch Out for Button Batteries and Magnets
Small coin and button batteries and loose magnets are serious hazards if swallowed. Choose toys with screw-secured battery compartments, keep spare batteries out of reach and supervise magnet sets with younger children around.
Match the Gift to Their Interests
The best gift fits what a child already loves: dinosaurs, art, sports, building, science or pretend play. Ask parents or teachers what they are into right now, and favor toys that let kids go deeper into that interest.
