How We Chose the Best Return Gifts for Kids Birthday
To choose the best return gifts for kids birthday, we chose return gifts that feel substantial, are reusable and work for most ages.
We also follow the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s advice to respect age labels, add helmets for riding toys and keep small parts away from children under 3. See the CPSC toy safety tips.
Product details in this guide come from manufacturer specifications, age grading and verified owner feedback. Read more on our How We Test page.
How to Choose the Best Return Gifts for Kids Birthday
Use these pointers to narrow down the best return gifts for kids birthday for the family you are shopping for.
How to Plan Party Favors
Count guests plus a few extras for siblings. One to three small items per bag is plenty. Avoid tiny parts if toddlers will be there, and check for nut-free or candy-free rules at school parties.
Greener Party Favor Ideas
Choose favors kids will keep or use up: wooden puzzles, seed paper, crayons and pencils. Skip single-use plastic trinkets and use paper or cloth bags instead of plastic.
Picking a Birthday Gift That Fits
Start with the child’s age and one current interest. A gift they can open and play with at the party, plus a simple card, beats an expensive toy that needs a grown-up to set up.
Respect the Age Label
Age grades on toys are about safety as much as skill. The CPSC requires warnings on toys with small parts that are choking hazards for children under 3, and advises keeping deflated balloons away from kids under 8. If a younger sibling shares the playroom, pick toys that are safe for the youngest child.
Return Gift Tips
A few simple ideas make the best return gifts for kids birthday feel even more personal:
- Choose one quality item.
- Add a thank-you tag.
- Match the party theme.
- Consider siblings.
- Pack in paper bags.
